This sculpture marks the location of the old fish cross in Ayr, which in bygone times was the place where local fisherman brought their catch to market. Conceived and installed as part of an environmental improvement scheme, the sculpture seeks to depict a scene that would have been commonplace when the fish cross was a thriving market.
Although at first glance the fisherman seems to be proudly presenting his fish for all to see, on closer inspection it becomes apparent that his attitude is one of reflection and sadness as he contemplates the death of the fish and with it the way of life that the old man once knew and loved.
