description 'Salute' is dedicated to the members of the Women's
Timber Corps or 'Lumberjills' as they were affectionately known, who made an invaluable contribution to the war effort by working in woodlands throughout the UK during Wold War II.

The sculpture is deliberately ambiguous in its stance. On one level the figure can be seen to be surveying the days work ahead. By placing the 'Lumberjill' looking West toward the setting sun with one arm raised in what seems to be a salute, the viewer becomes aware that their is a certain poignancy in the pose.

This long overdue memorial in recognition of the Lumberjills effort and hard work was unveiled in October 2007. Over 50 original Lumberjills managed to be present at the ceremony, some of whom even flew over from Canada to be reunited with their War time comrades.
